Qube Cinema, a manufacturer of digital cinema technology, needed a secure way to manage digital cinema keys online as the industry moved from physical film to digital distribution. The company had to satisfy content owners’ demand for very high security while also keeping the process simple enough for distributors and theater owners to use without added operational burden.

Qube Cinema used Thales e-Security hardware security modules to build KeySmith, an online key management system for digital cinema distribution. Thales HSMs provided tamper-resistant, FIPS 140-2 Level 3 protection for key handling and encryption/decryption operations, helping Qube deliver keys securely, support multiple geographic locations for resiliency, and manage an unlimited number of keys while keeping the system easy to operate.
