Nicor Gas protects Personally Identifiable Information with Vormetric Data Security

Nicor Gas, one of the largest natural gas distribution companies in the United States, needed to protect lockbox payment data and comply with the Illinois Personal Information Protection Act. Its WAUSAU Financial Systems ImageRPS lockbox application handled about 80,000 payments every business day, and the company wanted to secure production data containing personally identifiable information without changing the application or slowing it down.

Nicor Gas deployed Thales e-Security’s Vormetric Data Security to protect the image data created by the WAUSAU solution in its Windows Server and VMware environment. The company tested the system with and without Vormetric and saw no recognizable difference in response time, then moved the configuration into production. Nicor Gas said the protection was seamless, the data at rest is secure, and the solution mitigated the risk tied to the Illinois law.
