Japanese Hospital Network Leverages Thales e-Security Solutions To Comply With National Infrastructure Regulations

St. Marianna Association, a network of hospitals and a medical school in the greater Tokyo area, set out to meet and surpass Japan’s new cybersecurity guidelines for critical infrastructure after the 2015 breach at the Japan Pension Service exposed 1.2 million people’s personal data. The association needed encryption to protect critical data across multiple environments while preserving performance for patients and staff.

After evaluating several options, St. Marianna Association selected Vormetric Data Security Manager and Vormetric Transparent Encryption from Thales e-Security, first deploying them at Megumi Hospital in Tokyo. Thales e-Security enabled file-server encryption without changes to the systems being protected, and the association said the rollout was exceptionally easy. The result was regulatory compliance ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games, encryption that did not affect user experience, and a security model that could scale as the network and number of endpoints grew.
