NucleusHealth uses a cloud-based medical image management platform to give physicians, patients, and health systems global access to images. As its data volumes grew, the company needed a fully automated, enterprise-grade encryption approach that could support remote management, HIPAA compliance, FIPS 140-2 Level 2 and 3 requirements, and strict access controls for sensitive patient data. It evaluated MongoDB’s built-in encryption against Thales e-Security’s Vormetric Transparent Encryption and the Vormetric Data Security Manager.

Thales e-Security’s Vormetric Transparent Encryption met NucleusHealth’s evaluation criteria and was rolled out across the environment. The solution provided automated reporting, policy setting, auditing, role-based access control, and key management while allowing the company to use the free, open source release of MongoDB. NucleusHealth also said Thales supports scalability to the petabyte level and helps ensure that even users with root access cannot view unauthorized data or change policies.
