Finland Protects the Integrity of Electronic IDs and EAC e-passports with Thales

Population Register Centre of Finland worked with Thales e-Security to support Finland’s new e-passports and electronic identity services. As the country expanded its use of PKIs, Certification Authorities, and Citizen Certificates, it needed a way to protect the signing keys behind tamper-proof digital certificates and meet EU directives for electronic ID issuance.

Thales e-Security provided hardware security modules, including Thales nShield HSMs, to generate, store, and protect the signing keys used by the Population Register Centre’s root CA. The solution helped the organization issue e-passports with embedded digital certificates and fingerprints, while improving cost efficiency, high availability, scalability, and protection against passport fraud, counterfeiting, misuse, and privacy risks.
