Add Grup Protects Smart Meters With Secure Key Management From Thales

ADD Grup, an energy integrator that develops smart grid and smart metering solutions, needed a more secure key management approach as utility companies introduced new requirements to protect the energy supply chain. To win business, it had to create a system-wide root of trust, secure communication across smart meters, data concentrators, in-home displays, and the central system, and do so with rapid development, fast implementation, and FIPS 140-2 Level 3 compliance.

ADD Grup chose Thales e-Security’s keyAuthority key management system for its SIMS product. The hardware-based platform provided secure key storage, key generation, high availability, and KMIP-based management, with certificate provisioning from Microsoft PKI, and was sized to handle an estimated 10 million keys. The first deployment is underway in Eastern Europe and includes more than 100,000 smart meters and more than 1,000 DCs.
