Alwar launches 1,310 mini passenger वाहini vehicles with TERI

The city of Alwar faced significant public transport challenges due to rapid urbanization, which placed intense pressure on its existing infrastructure. The poor and low-income communities were most affected by the lack of adequate services, relying on old, unsafe, and polluting informal vehicles like auto rickshaws. TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute worked with the city to address this mobility crisis by implementing a new minibus passenger service known as Alwar Vahini.

TERI facilitated a solution that launched a fleet of modern, Euro IV compliant mini-passenger vans, replacing the older three-wheelers. The project was privately funded and involved multiple stakeholders, with TERI helping to coordinate an attractive exchange program for old vehicles, driver training, and the creation of necessary support infrastructure. The results were highly successful: the service now carries over 100,000 passengers daily, has directly employed more than 3,000 people, and has significantly reduced private vehicle usage, pollution, and congestion, all with zero investment from the government.
