Volvo Car Corporation drives product design, quality, cost reduction, and customer satisfaction through data-driven decision-making

Volvo Car Corporation, a long-standing leader in safety and quality, faced a growing challenge: modern vehicles generate vast diagnostic, configuration and warranty data, but Volvo’s legacy systems and separate data marts couldn’t handle the volume or support cross-functional analysis. CPU bottlenecks and slow query times prevented timely root-cause investigations, warranty validation and regulatory reporting, limiting the company’s ability to turn field data into product and service improvements.

Volvo consolidated diagnostic readouts, warranty claims, hardware and software specifications into a Teradata-based Volvo Data Warehouse (VDW), giving 300+ users fast, integrated access to 1.7 TB of controlled data. Query times fell from hours or weeks to minutes, infrastructure costs dropped by about two thirds, and the project delivered a time-adjusted ROI above 135%. The VDW improved warranty accuracy, accelerated defect discovery and remediation, supported compliance and environmental monitoring, and helped create a culture of data-driven design across the organization.
