A Teradata Case Study
Buttle UK, a charity supporting families and young people from vulnerable backgrounds, wanted to move beyond surface-level responses to understand the root causes of issues like homelessness, domestic abuse, mental health problems and repeat referrals. Working with DataKind, volunteer Teradata data scientists spent a weekend analyzing caseworker notes and grant data to determine how to optimize limited grant funds and uncover how social problems progress over time.
Using the Teradata Aster platform, text analytics and affinity/connection analysis, the team extracted key phrases from case notes, built interactive visualizations, and revealed high‑impact relationships—such as links between domestic abuse and child mental health, distinct needs in minority communities, and the origins of the most complex referrals. Those insights enabled Buttle UK to target resources more effectively, tailor services at critical moments (e.g., providing household items or additional grants), and redesign policies to better prevent escalation and support the families most in need.
