The Integrity of Healthcare Data and Secure Payment Processing

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which administers Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and the Health Insurance Marketplace for about 100 million Americans, faced an exploding volume of claims, beneficiary, provider and ancillary data processed regionally, making a single nationwide view nearly impossible. That fragmentation increased the risk of fraud, waste and abuse and left CMS needing a secure, scalable enterprise data warehouse and single system of record—including for Medicare Part D—to deliver consistent, timely analytics and reporting.

Teradata implemented the Integrated Data Repository (IDR), a centralized, scalable data warehouse that consolidated Medicare Parts A–D, DME, enrollment and reference data into one analytic platform. Since 2006 the IDR has grown from 9 TB to a 1‑petabyte Teradata system (plus a 333 TB Hadoop complement), supporting 48 programs, 42 major data sources and 2,400+ users, and enabling cross‑program analytics, risk scoring, faster fraud detection, improved data security, reduced latency and stronger compliance with federal program integrity requirements.
