A Teradata Case Study
HGST, the Western Digital brand, manufactures hundreds of millions of storage devices that generate massive parametric and field data (up to 1,000 MB per device) across globally distributed plants. Engineers were forced into reactive, siloed analysis—spending hours collating data from disparate systems—which slowed new-product cycles, lengthened failure-response times, and increased scrap and operational inefficiency.
HGST partnered with Think Big to build a Hadoop-based big data platform on AWS, ingesting years of data and tens of billions of files and using Hive, MapReduce and Impala for enrichment and analytics. The platform delivers an end-to-end “drive DNA” view that accelerates failure analysis (minutes/hours instead of weeks), enabled scanning of 380 billion test points across 8 million drives to find a code bug, and has reduced scrap, sped time-to-market, improved yields and increased customer satisfaction.
