A Teradata Case Study
Comcast, a leading media and communications company serving 24 million cable subscribers and operating hundreds of TV channels and online entertainment offerings, discovered that its first National Data Warehouse (2009) had been built as a series of ad hoc data marts. The lack of a long-term roadmap led to bolt-on tables and constrained future growth, so in August 2010 a steering committee launched a full re-architecture to create a scalable, consistent enterprise data platform.
Comcast adopted Teradata’s Communications Logical Data Model (CLDM) as the foundation, using its holistic subject-area layouts and focus on core domains (PARTY, EVENT, FINANCE) to shorten design time and reduce development costs. The effort produced firm standards for naming, key generation, history and auditing, plus DDL scripts to automate repetitive tasks; the result was a flexible roadmap that saved time in design, improved consistency, and helped surface missing requirements.
