How Seven West Media Captured Gold at the Rio Olympics

Seven West Media, Australia’s leading multi-platform broadcaster, set out to deliver an “unmissable” Rio 2016 Olympics by streaming 3,000+ hours across TV, web and a purpose-built app. The challenge was to integrate TV and digital audience measurement, capture user registrations and preferences, and scale to massive, spiky data volumes while turning granular events into actionable viewing sessions.

SWM adopted a cloud-first data ecosystem on AWS—using S3, Cloudera Hadoop for data preparation and Teradata Database on AWS for enterprise reporting—supported by R and Tableau for analytics and dashboards and automated, personalized engagement programs. The platform processed over 700 million records (peaking at 65M/day), powered 50+ daily dashboards, drove more than 1 million registrations with ~25% responding to targeted campaigns, and achieved a 29% uplift in minutes watched for engaged users (3 million people streamed 325 million minutes), creating a scalable audience-analytics asset for future broadcasts.
