A Teradata Case Study
BMW Group faced mounting pressure to support last‑minute customer changes while scaling production in overseas markets, which made its global parts supply chain increasingly complex and opaque. Relying on spreadsheets and legacy BI tools, the Material Control Overseas Plants team struggled to trace parts, spot bottlenecks early and accurately identify cost drivers across multiple logistics providers, forcing costly express shipments to meet demand.
BMW implemented an Agile Information Platform (AIP) with Teradata, consolidating some 80 data sources for end‑to‑end tracking, self‑service analytics and predictive insight. The platform enabled earlier detection of delays, centralised performance tracking of service providers and reduced manual IT bottlenecks—driving substantial cost savings, including an almost 70% reduction in air‑freight costs to China over two years, faster response to disruptions and improved material‑control efficiency.
