Driving Insights and Decisions Data Warehousing at Hudson’s Bay Company

Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC), one of Canada’s largest retailers with 500+ stores and 70,000 employees, faced fragmented operational systems and inconsistent reporting that left buyers and store managers making decisions by instinct. Moving from multiple data marts and a legacy BI tool to an enterprise reporting model created performance and user-adoption challenges that threatened the timely, accurate insights the business needed.

HBC addressed this by building a Teradata enterprise data warehouse, standardizing on MicroStrategy, establishing a BI Solution Center, and improving ETL processes (with plans to внедрить Informatica). The platform now serves 3,000+ users and 700 suppliers with single‑click, right‑time sales and inventory views and 100 report templates, improving data quality, inventory and promotion management, reducing lost sales and excess stock, aiding fraud detection (recouping $26K), and producing a demonstrated two‑for‑one ROI for 1999–2003.
