A Tenable Networks Case Study
Youngstown State University, a 15,000‑student urban research university with more than 2,300 machines on its network, faced a fragmented, time‑consuming security process that required staff to manually hunt through multiple logs and systems to detect vulnerabilities and prepare compliance reports. Protecting thousands of sensitive student and staff records while maintaining visibility across campus and personal devices created a pressing need for a consolidated, automated security view and repeatable audit workflows.
YSU implemented Tenable’s Unified Security Monitoring (SecurityCenter) to automatically collect and correlate AV, IPS, system logs and NetFlow into a single pane, streamlining incident detection and compliance reporting. The change recouped at least 15 hours per week (~$50,000 per year), saved roughly five hours per audit and hundreds of annual hours overall, delivered a complete university‑wide view that uncovered botnet activity and an unpatched virus source, and set the stage to integrate Nessus with patch management for even deeper vulnerability assurance.
