Instacart, the online grocery delivery service, needed a better way to manage complex workflows made up of many interdependent steps. Its existing mix of Airflow, cron jobs, and long-running RPCs made integration difficult, limited visibility, and raised reliability concerns. To address these issues, Instacart used Temporal Technologies’ Temporal platform, self-hosted with Python support, to help its platform team enable internal teams to build and maintain workflows more effectively.

With Temporal Technologies, Instacart streamlined workflow orchestration by using Temporal’s state management, retries, visibility, and testing capabilities. The result was improved developer productivity and faster decision-making, since engineers could focus more on business logic and less on infrastructure concerns. Temporal Technologies also helped Instacart scale significantly, supporting more than 10 million workloads per day.
