Box, a leading high-tech content cloud provider, needed a more reliable way to manage massive, dynamic folder hierarchies with millions of files, permissions, and metadata. Their homegrown queue-and-database orchestration system made it difficult to keep updates consistent, track workflow status, and recover from failures, creating risk for data integrity and operational complexity.

Temporal Technologies provided Temporal Cloud to replace and expand Box’s orchestration layer with workflow-as-code and durable workflows. Box used Temporal to centralize state, simplify orchestration, and migrate both orchestration and service logic through a controlled tenant-by-tenant rollout. The result was a more manageable, scalable foundation for critical file operations, and Temporal later expanded beyond the original use case as additional Box teams adopted it.
