How Datadog Ensures Database Reliability with Temporal

Datadog, the high-tech monitoring, analytics, and security platform, needed a better way to keep its growing fleet of domain-specific databases reliable as it scaled. Its Database Reliability Engineering team was relying on manual runbooks, bash scripts, and copy-paste remediation steps, which made operations hard to standardize and meant the team risked growing linearly with the number of datastores.

Temporal Technologies helped Datadog convert runbooks into Temporal Workflows and Activities using the Go SDK and a self-hosted Temporal deployment. This automated incident response, upgrades, scaling, and long-running database migrations, reducing drift and improving reliability and productivity. With Temporal Technologies, Datadog unlocked operations that previously weren’t practical, and adoption quickly expanded from the initial use case to more than 100 users across dozens of teams within about a year.
