Gowanus Canal Conservancy - Customer Case Study

The Gowanus Canal Conservancy, a nonprofit environmental advocacy group, faced the challenge of integrating its large volunteer network into its technical stormwater management monitoring efforts. Their previous projects with academic institutions were too complex for community engagement. They needed an accessible, scalable solution to collect and interpret environmental data to better advocate for policy changes and grants, leading them to partner with vendor Temboo and its Kosmos IoT System.

Temboo implemented its no-code Kosmos platform, which utilized sensors and Raspberry Pi hardware to easily collect soil moisture data. This empowered volunteers to monitor conditions and receive alerts, fostering greater community ownership and advocacy. The solution provided GCC with robust data to secure funding and quantify impact, such as the $360,000 in annual environmental services provided by local trees. Temboo's technology enabled a successful bottom-up framework for community-driven environmental action.
