WM Systems saves utilities up to 77% in meter O&M with Telit

The customer, WM Systems, a provider of IoT devices for utilities, faced the challenge of helping utility companies avoid costly, periodic smart meter replacements as cellular network technologies evolved. Partnering with vendor Telit Cinterion and using modules from their xE910 family, including the CE910-SL and UE910-GL, WM Systems sought a future-proof solution to prevent these surprise operational expenses for their clients.

The solution implemented by Telit provided WM Systems with pin-to-pin compatible cellular IoT modules, enabling the design of a universal smart metering modem. This allowed utilities to upgrade their existing meter infrastructure to newer technologies like LTE without purchasing entirely new meters, saving millions. For one utility, this resulted in the affordable upgrade of 30,000 smart meters, protecting their long-term operational savings estimated at up to $406 million over 20 years.
