MetaSail tracks sailboat races in real time with Telit, achieving 2-meter accuracy and 4-day battery life

MetaSail, a sailboat tracking solution created by the Italian company Meteda, faced the challenge of making regatta races visible and analyzable for spectators, sailors, and officials. They needed an affordable, robust, and globally connected IoT solution to track boats in real-time with high accuracy, but lacked expertise in key communication hardware and cellular data plans. They partnered with vendor Telit to access the necessary IoT modules, connectivity, and platform.

The solution was built using Telit's GPS and cellular modules, SIM cards for global roaming, and the Telit IoT Platform. This provided reliable data transmission even with hundreds of devices in a small area, extended battery life for week-long events, and a seamless cloud link to MetaSail's web interface. The results included a successful deployment for over 1,200 users tracking a European Cup, real-time positional accuracy within two meters, and a plug-and-play product that enhanced race viewing and post-race analysis without burdening sailors.
