World’s First “Real Time” Hospital Increases Hand Washing Monitoring 1000% in One Month

The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust faced the challenge of low hand hygiene compliance among staff, a major contributor to healthcare-associated infections. As part of the government-sponsored Safe Hands initiative, the Trust initially attempted to install an RTLS monitoring system with another vendor, but the project failed. They then turned to TeleTracking to resurrect the initiative and address this critical patient safety issue.

TeleTracking implemented its RTLS and capacity management software to create a comprehensive operational platform. The solution automated hand hygiene monitoring, providing real-time feedback and tracking compliance. This implementation led to a 1000% increase in observed hand washing events in one month, from 600 manual observations to 1.2 million automated ones. TeleTracking's system also improved overall hospital efficiency by speeding up bed turnover, locating equipment faster, and enabling contact tracing for infection control.
