MedStar Georgetown University Hospital - Customer Case Study

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, a major medical center, faced challenges with patient throughput and longer-than-expected hospital stays. They needed to reduce the time it took to safely discharge patients. The hospital identified that they were not fully utilizing their existing system from vendor TeleTracking, which could help solve communication issues and provide staff with better visibility into the discharge process.

The solution involved a Lean Six Sigma project that included a new application of the TeleTracking system. The vendor's technology was used to create a HIPAA-compliant electronic whiteboard that provided real-time discharge status updates, patient location, and room availability. This improved coordination among staff. As a result, TeleTracking helped the hospital achieve a 21% increase in monthly discharge volume, reduce the length of stay by 0.52 days on the pilot unit, and increase morning discharges to 24% of the total.
