Managing Transcoding and Workflows at SuperSport

SuperSport, a leading pay-TV broadcaster in Africa and part of the Naspers Group, faced the challenge of ingesting high-quality mezzanine files from international suppliers while operating within limited South African bandwidth. To meet subscriber expectations for pristine HD and SD video the company adopted UDP-accelerated transfer services (Aspera, Signiant, Smartjog), but still needed robust post-ingest processing, QC and workflow control to avoid quality loss during transcoding and delivery.

SuperSport deployed Telestream Vantage to orchestrate multi-vendor workflows, automate process dependencies and handle transcoding, Dolby loudness/audio workflows, subtitle proxying and manual final QC. The six-node Vantage network with mirrored SQL and built-in load balancing enabled a steady, “factory-like” content flow, faster turnarounds and reduced piracy risk — for example, pulling a file on Monday and transmitting the episode by Friday — while supporting an ongoing partnership to evolve workflows.
