Matsushita Boosts Sales and Virtually Eliminates Paper and Shipping Errors with NORAND RF Technology

Matsushita Electric of Canada Ltd. needed to eliminate a monthly warehouse shutdown for physical inventory, reduce paperwork and shipping errors, and improve overall operations. Logistics manager William Austin estimated that gaining one selling day per month would be worth more than $12 million a year, so the company sought an on-line RF data collection and warehouse management solution.

Matsushita implemented NORAND® RF data collection integrated with an AS/400-based Warehouse Management System from TECSYS Inc., deploying 56 NORAND RT1700 handhelds across four facilities (UHF and spread spectrum). The solution enabled on-line daily cycle counting, a paperless workflow, and a receiving-to-picking turnaround of 15 minutes; dock efficiency rose by at least 50%, shipping errors are virtually eliminated (most months show zero discrepancies), month-end close was removed, and the system was expanded to the parts department (120,000 SKUs) and additional facilities, including Vancouver.
