A Tecplot, Inc. Case Study
The University of Maryland utilizes Tecplot, Inc.'s Tecplot 360 software to visualize and study complex turbulent heat and gas exchanges at the atmosphere-ocean interface. A key research challenge was the difficulty in measuring small turbulent flow structures in laboratory and field experiments, which is essential for quantifying interactions with the interface and the mass balance between the atmosphere and ocean. This work required a method to understand vast amounts of complex computational fluid dynamics (CFD) data.
Tecplot 360 provided the solution by enabling researchers to create state-of-the-art visualizations and animations of turbulent vortices and gas concentration mappings. The software reduced computational efforts and helped propose ideas for a stronger, physics-based turbulence model. The results included a deeper scientific understanding of environmental fluid mechanics, leading to published findings on vortex detection strategies and enhanced gas exchange rates, ultimately contributing to the broader study of global carbon cycles and climate science.
