Unified Environment for Comparing and Validating Results from Multiple Reservoir Simulators

The Strickland Group, led by Dr. Richard F. Strickland, needed a way to compare and validate results from multiple reservoir simulators for a complex mature oil field with many wells, multiple recovery methods, and competing history-match inputs. Tecplot, Inc.’s Tecplot RS reservoir simulation visualization and analysis software was used as the common interface to review data from VIP, ECLIPSE, and SENSOR models.

Using Tecplot RS, The Strickland Group overlaid XY data and history data on shared graphs, used delta comparisons to quantify differences, and explored 3D reservoir behavior with slicing, blanking, and animations. Tecplot, Inc. helped streamline analysis, improve understanding of flow behavior and well interactions, and support better assessment of each simulator’s strengths and weaknesses, while also enabling publication-quality graphs and a more efficient workflow.
