Thermal Visualization of a Self-Sustaining Green House

Researchers at UC Berkeley's Department of Mechanical Engineering aimed to design a self-sustaining greenhouse using a multi-physics ray-tracing simulation. Their challenge was to efficiently visualize their complex simulation data to verify the model, debug their code, and optimize the greenhouse design. They turned to Tecplot, Inc. and used their product, Tecplot 360 with the PyTecplot API, to gain better insight into their results.

The solution involved using PyTecplot to create a direct, real-time connection between their Python simulation code and the visualization software. This integration removed the need for intermediate data formatting, drastically reduced runtime, and provided immediate visual feedback. As a result, the team streamlined their workflow, easily generated presentation-ready animations, and accelerated their research progress. Tecplot's tools were cited as essential for sharing their findings with the broader scientific community.
