Tecplot’s SZL Server, a Client-Server Solution for Visual Analysis of Remote Data

Innovative Technology Applications Company, LLC used Tecplot’s tools to help Chris Nelson, Chief Scientist for CFD, tackle complex jet noise simulation work on remote HPC systems. His challenge was that the aeroacoustics datasets were too large to transfer over a residential internet connection, and remote visualization was slow and cumbersome.

Tecplot’s SZL Server, available in Tecplot 360 2017 and later, let Innovative Technology Applications Company convert data to SZL format on the remote machine and stream only the needed subzones to the local client. Tecplot reported that this reduced transfer volume dramatically, to about 1% of the full data file for the jet noise example, improving display speed and avoiding remote version-install issues while giving Chris more control over which Tecplot version he used.
