Tecplot helps utility researchers visualize magnetic fields

Hydro-Québec, a provincial electrical utility in Canada, needed to visualize the complex 3D magnetic flux density around a distribution power line with branching circuits, a challenge due to the lack of rotational symmetry. Their research scientist, Sylvain Gravel, utilized Tecplot 360 software to overcome this obstacle and accurately see the invisible magnetic forces.

Tecplot provided the solution by processing the 3D field data from a BEM simulation, enabling the creation of detailed isosurfaces and contour plots. This allowed Gravel to verify proper phasing, observe current flow changes, and explore data dependencies. The results, used for analysis, internal publications, and presentations, significantly enhanced the research process. Tecplot distinguished itself by offering superior control and advanced 3D visualization capabilities, which helped Hydro-Québec refine its practices and maintain its position as an environmentally friendly utility.
