Studying the Complex Flow Physics of Dragonfly Flight

Tecplot, Inc.'s customer, Wright State University, faced the significant challenge of unraveling the complex aerodynamics of dragonfly flight. A research team led by Dr. Haibo Dong needed to create precise, full-body 3D simulations to study the flow physics, wing deformations, and multi-wing interactions, which were too difficult to analyze with previous methods. Their goal was to use these insights to develop quad-winged micro-air vehicles (MAVs) for public safety applications.

The solution was implemented using Tecplot 360. The university's team used the software to run CFD simulations on meticulously reconstructed 3D dragonfly kinematics, enabling them to visualize and analyze the flow physics with high precision. As a result, they became the first researchers to successfully create a detailed 3D numerical simulation of a dragonfly in free flight. The project also served as a powerful tool for inspiring future scientists, successfully captivating high school students and encouraging them to pursue careers in engineering and science.
