A Tecplot, Inc. Case Study
The George Washington University's Flow Simulations and Analysis Group (FSAG) sought to understand the complex fluid dynamics behind the highly effective underwater dolphin kick used by elite Olympic swimmers. Their challenge was to analyze and visualize the 3D vortex topology and pressure distribution around a swimmer's body to determine the source of the thrust generated. To accomplish this, they utilized their proprietary VICAR3D CFD code in conjunction with Tecplot, Inc.'s Tecplot 360 software for analysis and visualization.
Using Tecplot 360, the researchers were able to closely examine the simulations, creating animated iso-surface plots and surface pressure contours to dissect the complex flow fields. This allowed them to identify high- and low-pressure zones on the swimmer's body to pinpoint where thrust is generated. Tecplot's solution provided the team with crucial insights into the fluid dynamics of swimming, significantly boosting their research productivity and output, with the potential to inform the development of an optimal swimming technique.
