Advanced Simulation Code Unveils the Mystery of Acoustic Waves

Drexel University researchers, led by Dr. Baki Farouk, were studying the complex phenomena of acoustic streaming—a steady fluid motion created by the interaction of acoustic waves and a solid surface. Their challenge was to visualize and understand the time-dependent, compressible flow fields and pressure waves within a gas-filled resonator to see how they drive these second-order streaming structures.

The solution involved using Tecplot 360 to visualize data from direct numerical simulations performed with a custom Fortran code. Tecplot enabled the team to create clear 2D and 3D plots of pressure, temperature, and velocity, revealing the instantaneous interactions and the resulting steady streaming motions. This use of Tecplot provided critical insight into the physical phenomena, helping advance research with practical applications in areas like thermoacoustic refrigeration system design.
