A Technology Integration Group Case Study

Preview of the Texas A&M University–Kingsville Case Study

With VMware View, University Offers 7,000 Users Speedy, Reliable Access to Latest Applications and Data

Texas A&M University–Kingsville needed to give 6,600 students and 1,100 employees fast, reliable access to the latest applications and data while reducing the burden of maintaining more than 4,000 campus PCs. The university also wanted to improve security, extend hardware life, and better support access from campus and mobile devices. Technology Integration Group (TIG) helped evaluate the options, including VMware View desktop virtualization.

Technology Integration Group (TIG) implemented VMware View 4.6, along with VMware vSphere and related infrastructure, to deliver virtual desktops for students and staff. The result was 240 student virtual images with about 160 more planned, plus 50 persistent staff images, faster deployment of updates, improved security, and lower total cost of ownership. Texas A&M University–Kingsville said the rollout took just 90 days, cut refresh cycles from 4 years for PCs to a targeted 7 years for zero clients, and let IT push security patches campus-wide in minutes.
