Nonprofit Powers Up from Paper to Telehealth at Viral Speed

The Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California is a volunteer-run nonprofit in Oakland that provides free preventive care to uninsured and low-income patients. The clinic relied on paper charts and manual scheduling, which wasted staff time tracking mislaid files, exhausted its limited storage space, and left it unprepared when COVID-19 made in-person visits impossible.

A donated Kareo installation gave the clinic an electronic patient database, integrated appointment system and, when the pandemic hit, rapid telehealth capability. The shift eliminated filing cabinets, enabled remote prescriptions, lab orders and messaging, improved staff efficiency by about 20%, ensured HIPAA-compliant security, and let patients safely receive care from home.
