Using smart antenna technology for Smart Terminals

JAOtech, a manufacturer of patient entertainment and point-of-care Smart Terminals (now part of Barco), needed to ensure a reliable wireless connection for its devices in hospital environments. Their challenge was achieving strong WiFi performance within a terminal that had very little internal space and a metal-backed, shielded housing that detuned antennas. They engaged antenna vendor Taoglas to find a solution.

Taoglas implemented its custom-tuned PC-11 dual-band dipole antenna, designed for the 802.11n MIMO standard. This solution increased antenna efficiency from 20% to 45%, resulting in a farther connection range and higher data throughput for the Smart Terminals. For the hospitals, this meant needing fewer routers for full coverage and enabling new capabilities like real-time video streaming. JAOtech reported that the Taoglas solution provided greater device performance and sensitivity across the entire hospital WiFi network.
