Department of Customs and Border Protection Transforms Employee Mobility

Customs and Border Protection faced a federal mandate to reduce leased square footage and expand telework while keeping productivity high; their Office of Administration was using nearly 14,000 sq. ft. with assigned seating, heavy paper use and limited collaboration. The changes delivered measurable results: a first-phase reduction of 5,300 sq. ft. and $287,000 annual rent savings, 98% of employees reporting improved communication, a 102% increase in productivity, per-employee commuting savings of over $600, and in a larger second phase a 46% cut in square footage and $3.3 million per year in rent and operational savings.
