Collins Aerospace launches Digital Sky in 7 months with tangerine

The customer Collins Aerospace, a seating manufacturer, collaborated with the vendor tangerine and technology provider Thales to address the challenge of declining seatback in-flight entertainment (IFE) revenue. With passengers increasingly using their own devices, the challenge was to create a new solution that would enrich the passenger journey, open new revenue streams for airlines, and provide an attractive alternative to personal devices.

The vendor tangerine designed "Digital Sky," a new premium seat and IFE product pairing featuring a large 22.5” HD portrait touchscreen. This solution introduced a paradigm-shift in IFE engagement with a split-screen feature for simultaneous activities and a novel way to stow the meal table. The concept, which included eight working prototypes, was successfully demonstrated at a major expo and was designed to significantly increase passenger engagement and open new revenue streams by taking advantage of advances in onboard connectivity.
