Using data to drive better university decision making

The University of Sydney, a leading research university with over 70,000 students and 7,500 staff, faced fragmented, slow and inconsistent access to institutional data. Its Institutional Analytics and Planning team launched a three-year plan to build a Modern Data Environment (MDE) to consolidate siloed sources and provide a robust foundation for university decision-making.

Using Talend Cloud to ingest data into an AWS-based environment (Cloudera CDH on AWS with S3 storage), supported by Wipro and Talend, the MDE centralized 2 billion records from 12 data sources and enabled fast, scalable access. The new platform accelerated business-led analytics, powering projects like real-time learning analytics and library usage insights and creating more partnership opportunities across the university.
