The Hospice Général of Geneva Standardizes Its Information System Using Talend ESB

Hospice Général is Geneva’s public social welfare institution, serving over 20,000 people with a staff of more than 1,000 and a CHF 382M budget. Its IT team faced an unsustainable landscape of fragile point-to-point interfaces, poor interoperability with external partners, and increasing maintenance risk that threatened continuity and limited the ability to deliver timely social services.

The IT department implemented Talend Application Integration/ESB (built on Apache ActiveMQ and Java) to standardize and centralize integration, migrate about 100 interfaces, and expose secure web services—most notably for a unified income eligibility (RDU) system and a shared “social log.” The result: immediate operational gains (an estimated 2–3 days saved per person per week across departments), more reliable partner exchanges, reduced vendor lock-in, and self-supporting IT processes that enabled new services such as a tablet-based housing application.
