m2ocity is a French smart‑metering operator (a joint venture of Orange and Veolia) that collects water and environmental sensor data to help cities and utilities manage resources. Facing rapid growth—from 10,000 to 1.6 million meters—and a national need to cut water loss (France loses ~1,300 billion liters/year), m2ocity was hampered by its partner’s inability to process the surging data, which caused client complaints and limited new service delivery.

To solve this, m2ocity implemented Talend Data Services/ESB to decode, integrate and deliver massive IoT data streams. Deployed in six months, the solution powers services such as leak alerts and blocked‑meter detection, now managing 1.6 million smart objects across ~2,000 cities, treating 16 million messages in an hour daily, and providing portal access to 10,000 users—while enabling faster time‑to‑market and plans for a Hadoop‑based big‑data platform.
