Aalto University builds a design system with Taiste, reaching 96% performance and 100% best practices

Aalto University, one of the largest universities in Finland, faced a challenge in maintaining high-quality, consistent, and on-brand digital touchpoints across its vast ecosystem of hundreds of websites built by thousands of creators. They needed a unified solution to empower their diverse community of students, faculty, and staff to build digital services for a wide range of needs, from research to course management. To solve this, they partnered with the vendor Taiste to implement a comprehensive design system.

Taiste delivered the Aalto Design System, a technology-agnostic toolbox built with design tokens, React components, and extensive documentation in Figma and Storybook. The solution ensures all digital services are accessible, meeting WCAG 2.1 AA standards, and employs green coding for sustainability. The system has been recognized with multiple awards, including a Red Dot Award and a European Design Award, and delivers excellent performance scores, including a 96% Google PageSpeed rating.
