Case Study: VersaBank modernizes its VPN and enables seamless remote access with Tailscale

VersaBank partnered with Tailscale to modernize their VPN

VersaBank, one of Canada’s top 10 commercial banks and a digital-first “branchless” institution, needed to replace its aging VPN to improve security, simplify administration, and support modern remote access. The legacy setup was difficult to maintain, relied on vendor-dependent hardware, and made features like two-factor authentication and ACL updates cumbersome. VersaBank partnered with Tailscale to find a more secure, easier-to-manage VPN solution.

Tailscale replaced VersaBank’s legacy VPN hardware and software with a software-only VPN built on WireGuard, integrated with the bank’s existing SSO for 2FA, and used ACLs based on user and device groups for easier network segmentation. The rollout was completed before the COVID-19 pandemic, helping VersaBank move employees home with far less disruption and enabling secure access to internal resources from remote locations. Tailscale also improved reliability and responsiveness, reduced bottlenecks, and became a key part of VersaBank’s business continuity plan.
