A Tailscale Case Study

How Positron easily scales AI deployments for customers with Tailscale

Positron, a 2023-founded AI infrastructure company building FPGA-based inference systems for large language models, needed a secure, simple VPN and internal access solution for its engineering team and customer-facing environments. Tailscale was adopted first to replace more cumbersome tools like OpenVPN, Cisco AnyConnect, and Palo Alto Networks, helping Positron secure internal dashboards, streamline onboarding, and manage access across employee workstations, demo machines, and engineering servers.

Tailscale then became a core part of Positron’s deployment strategy, connecting distributed Fly.io API servers back to its Washington data center so they could securely reach FPGA inference servers. With Tailscale ACLs and tags, Positron can quickly spin up secure Testflight environments for new prospects and customers, saving an estimated hour per onboarded prospect while supporting its “try before you buy” model.
