Case Study: Corelight improves access, security, and user experience with Tailscale

A Tailscale Case Study

Preview of the Corelight Case Study

How Corelight severed ties with their old VPN

Corelight, a cybersecurity company that transforms network and cloud activity into evidence, was struggling with an outdated OpenVPN setup for secure access to internal resources across AWS, on-prem hardware, and virtual machines. The VPN required heavy manual support, had single points of failure, and delivered a poor user experience with slow onboarding, dropped connections, and overloaded servers.

Corelight implemented Tailscale’s enterprise-grade WireGuard solution, using Tailscale ACLs, API, subnet routers, and later Tailscale SSH to modernize access control and simplify secure connectivity. With Tailscale, Louis Gardner was able to restore engineering access in about 10 minutes during a network outage, automate and centrally manage version-controlled ACLs, and reduce reliance on public IPs—while more than two-thirds of employees now use Tailscale for a faster, more user-friendly experience.
