Case Study: Globalways achieves resilient VPN failover with Tailscale

A Tailscale Case Study

Globalways uses Tailscale to ensure resilience in case of a catastrophic failure

Globalways, a German internet service provider with 19 points of presence across Germany, needed a more resilient out-of-band network and VPN failover strategy. Its existing OpenVPN setup had become hard to maintain and vulnerable to a single point of failure, creating risk during a central concentrator outage.

Globalways implemented Tailscale, a WireGuard-based modern VPN, to build a zero-configuration full-mesh network, automate key rotation, and manage access with JSON-based ACLs. Tailscale also ran on Opengear hardware via the CLI, and when a catastrophic routing misconfiguration occurred, the backup setup quickly restored connectivity and significantly reduced downtime—helping Globalways avoid prolonged disruption and keep VPN operations running with minimal worry.
