The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, a world-leading genomics research center that produces massive, continuous streams of data, needed better ways to visualize and track samples and project baselines. Their Oracle database handled data input and reporting but had limited visualization, and routine sample-tracking tasks took three to three-and-a-half hours each week.

They deployed Tableau Desktop with live connections to the Oracle database and shared visualizations via Tableau Server with scheduled updates and team scorecards. This cut sample-tracking time to about 30–45 minutes, gave near–minute-by-minute visibility, enabled managers to drill into team metrics, and helped staff spot and resolve problems earlier, improving overall efficiency.
