Case Study: Wellcome achieves data-driven allocation of £5bn research funding with Tableau Software

A Tableau Software Case Study

Preview of the Wellcome Case Study

Wellcome develops a data-first mindset to better allocate £5bn research funding with Tableau

Wellcome is a London‑based, politically and financially independent foundation that funds health research from a £26.8bn investment portfolio and plans to spend about £5bn over the next five years (roughly £1bn a year). Although grant operations ran through a Grant Tracker, the organisation lacked an aggregated, analytics‑ready view of its portfolio—monthly reporting was manual, programme performance and impact were hard to assess, and portfolio managers needed better visibility to target innovation effectively.

Wellcome built a new data warehouse, ingested diverse sources with Alteryx, and standardised on Tableau Server to enable self‑service analytics for ~200 staff. Dashboards now replace manual reports, speeding insight and improving fund allocation—portfolio managers can track progress (for example, on leishmaniasis projects), make data‑driven funding decisions, assess impact more clearly, and increase transparency with plans to publish public dashboards.
