United Utilities analyses billions of rows of data to improve water supply with Tableau

United Utilities supplies water and wastewater services to around seven million people across the North West of England, operating a complex network of pipes, reservoirs, pumps and sensors. Facing heavy regulation and fragmented data spread across more than 30 sources, the company needed a way to aggregate billions of rows of data, standardise reporting and respond quickly to changing demand (for example during COVID-19) rather than relying on siloed “versions of the truth.”

United Utilities deployed Tableau to empower some 2,000 users and citizen data scientists to build joined-up dashboards and run about 250,000 analytics queries per day. The daily views of energy use and field activity cut energy consumption by up to 15% at target sites (saving over £850,000 a year), halved unallocated workforce schedule time, improved incident response and created a single, auditable source of performance insight.
